Measurement and maintenance · Branch M.C, AI visibility telemetry
M-09 Use Google Generative AI Performance as the official source of telemetry
AI Overviews and AI Mode impressions, and the page, country and device dimensions, must be monitored using Search Console's official data before any third-party estimates.
- Scope
- Google Search Console Generative AI Performance
- Priority
- High priority.
- Quality bucket
- Measurement and experiment readiness
- Legacy coverage
- GEO-54
Why it matters
Third-party estimates of AI Overviews and AI Mode visibility are modelled guesses, while Search Console reports what Google itself recorded. Relying on estimates first can send a team in the wrong direction. Impressions on their own also say little about business value, so they need to be read alongside conversions and the changes you made.
How to implement
- Review the Search Console report weekly and on a 28-day trend.
- Identify top pages and the clusters that are growing or declining.
- Segment the data by country and device.
- Add annotations for major SEO and GEO changes so they can be linked to movements in the data.
- Evaluate impressions together with conversion data.
Checklist
- Track weekly and 28-day trends.
- Pull out top pages and growing or declining clusters.
- Segment by country and device.
- Link major SEO and GEO changes to annotations.
- Evaluate impressions together with conversion data.
How to audit
- GSC report export and measurement cadence.
How UltimateSEO checks this automatically
Partly automated. The Generative AI Performance report in Search Console and how it feeds decisions. The crawl gives a signal; a person decides the final state with business evidence.
States used: PASS, FAIL, UNKNOWN, NOT_APPLICABLE or BLOCKED. UNKNOWN is never shown as a pass. How states work.
