Why it matters
A single keyword or prompt gives a narrow and unstable picture of how a brand appears in generative answers. People ask about a subject in many ways, from discovery to trust to support, and a measurement set that covers only one of them misses most of that. Topic-level cohorts show where visibility is strong or missing across the whole subject.
How to implement
- Build a topic taxonomy for the subjects that matter to the business.
- Select discovery, comparison, local, trust and support prompts for each topic.
- Group the prompts into a cohort per topic rather than relying on one prompt.
- Report Citation, Mention and Recommendation share for each topic.
Checklist
- Build a topic taxonomy.
- For each topic, select discovery, comparison, local, trust and support prompts.
- Measure Citation, Mention and Recommendation share by topic.
- Use a prompt cohort instead of a single prompt.
How to audit
- Topic coverage and balance of the prompt panel.
How UltimateSEO checks this automatically
Partly automated. PASS when an AI visibility snapshot exists for at least one prompt group so that measurement happens at topic level; otherwise UNKNOWN. The crawl gives a signal; a person decides the final state with business evidence.
States used: PASS, FAIL, UNKNOWN, NOT_APPLICABLE or BLOCKED. UNKNOWN is never shown as a pass. How states work.
