I-04 Primary intent and page type must be set using evidence

P0Strong practiceNeeds your evidence

A URL's purpose and format must be decided from SERP behaviour, user research and existing site data, not from an LLM's guess.

Why it matters

If an LLM guesses the intent and format, the page may not match what people searching for it actually want. Competing URLs for the same intent split the signals, and a mismatched page type serves neither users nor AI answer engines. Evidence from the SERP, users and your own data keeps each URL doing a distinct job.

How to implement

  1. Add primary intent, audience and desired action to every brief.
  2. Review the top results and record which page types appear.
  3. Define the user's real task separately from the SERP format.
  4. Merge URLs that target the same intent and give each different intent its own landing page.
  5. Document the reason whenever the SERP format conflicts with business or user evidence.
  6. Stop opening new URLs when the existing canonical URL already solves the intent.

Checklist

  • Write the primary intent, audience and desired action in the brief.
  • Merge URLs that target the same intent.
  • Open a different landing page for a different intent.
  • Map the spread of result types in the top results, such as service page, list, comparison, tool, category, video and local result.
  • Define the user's real task separately.
  • If the SERP format conflicts with business or user evidence, document the reason.
  • Do not leave the page type decision to the writer LLM.
  • Do not open a new URL if the existing canonical URL already solves the same intent.

How to audit

  • Produce a query-to-URL map.
