A vs B, alternatives and best-for-X content must compare options against the same criteria standard and must not declare your own product the winner in every scenario.

Why it matters

A comparison where one option always wins reads as advertising, and readers cannot use it to make a real choice. AI answer engines and search engines gain little from a page whose verdict is fixed in advance. Shared criteria and honest trade-offs are what make a comparison useful.

How to implement

  1. Agree the comparison criteria before you gather any data.
  2. Measure every option against the same data standard and explain the scoring method.
  3. Add a section on who each option is for and who it is not for.
  4. Assess price and value separately from technical performance, and say plainly where your product loses.
  5. Disclose any conflict of interest, and only create comparison pages where users have a real need for them.

Checklist

  • Define the criteria before making the comparison.
  • Measure every option against the same data standard.
  • Add 'Who is it for and who is it not for?'.
  • Assess price and value separately from technical performance.
  • If your own product loses in some scenarios, do not hide that.
  • Create 'A vs B', 'alternatives' and 'best for X' pages only if there is a real user need.
  • Use common criteria and a transparent methodology.
  • Do not stuff competitors in order to get brand mentions.
  • Do not declare your own brand the winner in every scenario in a non-objective way.

How to audit

  • Check the scoring methodology.
  • Check data source parity across the options.
  • Check the conflict-of-interest disclosure.
  • Check Mention and Recommendation share in the comparative prompt cohort.
