Why it matters

A sitemap full of redirected, blocked or non-canonical URLs wastes crawl effort and sends mixed signals about what should be indexed. If lastmod or IndexNow notifications claim changes that never happened, search engines learn to distrust them, so real updates are picked up more slowly. That affects both traditional results and the AI features that rely on fresh, accurate index data.

How to implement

  1. Crawl every sitemap URL and remove any that do not return 200, are not canonical or are not indexable.
  2. Tie lastmod to genuine content changes only, not to every template or build update.
  3. Split large sitemaps into a sitemap index.
  4. Connect IndexNow to your CMS publish, update and delete events.
  5. Set up logs and alerts so failed IndexNow submissions are noticed and fixed.

Checklist

  • Include only URLs that return 200, are canonical and are indexable.
  • Update lastmod only when the content genuinely changes.
  • Use a sitemap index on large sites.
  • Add only canonical, indexable, 200 URLs to the sitemap.
  • Change lastmod only when there is a real substantive change in the content.
  • Connect an IndexNow webhook to CMS publish, update and delete events.
  • Set up logging and alerts for failed submissions.
  • Do not use the trick of showing every URL as updated every day.

How to audit

  • Crawl the sitemap URLs and verify their status and indexability.
  • Review sitemap diffs.
  • Review IndexNow submission logs.
  • Compare lastmod values with actual content differences.

How UltimateSEO checks this automatically

Automated. Checked automatically: sitemap reachable and valid XML, a sample of listed URLs returns 200 and is canonical and indexable, lastmod values are plausible (not all identical, none in the future); IndexNow key presence is reported as information.

States used: PASS, FAIL, UNKNOWN, NOT_APPLICABLE or BLOCKED. UNKNOWN is never shown as a pass. How states work.
